Ford Ranger Ends Production

The end of the Ford Ranger is here. The American auto maker has discontinued the small truck, in favor of a hybrid F-150 in the works. Shoppers can still get into a Ranger at Lindsay Ford in Wheaton, MD.

Ranger was a larger pickup back in the 60's and 70's, and evolved into its current, small truck form in 1984. The vehicle hit its sales peak of 348,358 vehicles sold in 1999, beating out foreign competition. Ranger still offers a 4-cylinder engine that achieves 27 miles per gallon highway. This even beats out the top MPG rating of a (non-hybrid) V6 Ford F-150.

Ford Ranger assembly line employees across North America, 800 total, will be transferred to other facilities. Ranger will still be offered in Australia, Africa, and Thailand.

"I'm surprised," says Ranger owner Samuel Taylor. "I thought the Ranger was here to stay, like the F-150. But times are tough. People are making do with what they got, I guess."1
